FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASENovember 3, 2005 These Walls Can Talk Paso
Robles, CA – Flight
Environments, Inc. has dedicated 20,000 square feet of manufacturing space
to a recently developed process for acoustic treatment of ceiling and
sidewall panels, bulkheads, and other surfaces found in executive and VIP
interiors. The process was
designed to create an acoustically friendly interior without significant
weight or aesthetic sacrifices. “We
wanted to find a way to bridge the performance gap between ‘hard’ and
‘soft’ interiors,” said Eamon Halpin, President and CEO of Flight
Environments. “We’ve
always been about the details behind the interior shell, but the
increasing demand for lower sound levels has forced us to find solutions
inside the cabin. Our new process allows us to deliver a completely
finished seat, sidewall, ceiling panel, or bulkhead that is acoustically
superior to anything previously seen on aircraft.” “We
can have the interior components shipped in, treated, and out the door in
much less time than it would take to ship treatment materials and teach
the process on site,” said Colin Judge, Executive Vice President of
Flight Environments. “In
the process, we also provide organizational benefit to the completion
center by providing custom made storage for the panels which would
otherwise be sitting in various places about the hangar.
This is particularly beneficial for multiple order customers who
will have the original storage containers on site after the first aircraft
is done, and can utilize them as soon as components are taken out of the
next aircraft.” Judge estimates that the process, which originally
took 15 days and four separate project management trips to the aircraft,
was cut down to only one week of in-house work, saving eight days of labor
and dead storage time. Flight
Environments recently utilized the process for the first time on a system
designed for Greenpoint Technologies of Kirkland, Washington.
Flight Environments was contracted to provide multiple systems for
Boeing 747’s to be treated by Greenpoint.
The first aircraft was treated with the standard method, at the
completion center, with Flight Environments project managers on site.
When the new process was implemented for the second aircraft, the
benefits were immediately noticeable. "Flight
Environments' results on the first 747 were outstanding, but the process
had room for improvement,” said Jon Buccola, President and CEO of
Greenpoint. “They recognized that potential and developed a
solution before the next aircraft was shipped in. As soon as we were
ready, they took delivery of the panels and completed the treatment in
less than half the time it took on the previous project. The time
and cost benefits were substantial, and the overall organization of the
project benefited from Flight Environments’ careful storage and handling
of the panels." Flight Environments, the leading supplier of thermal and acoustic insulation systems for private and corporately configured aircraft, uses a repertoire of over 85 combinations of sound-dampening materials to develop its custom-tailored sound solutions. In addition to sound reduction, Flight Environments’ materials provide a water vapor barrier and thermal insulation, helping to prolong the life of cabin materials while maintaining a comfortable cabin temperature. FEI systems and materials meet or exceed the Federal Aviation Association’s (FAA) recently adopted “Improved Flammability Standards” and comply with CFR 25.856 (a).
