Flight Environments Breaks the Sound Barrier

Orlando, FL – An undisclosed customer recently took delivery of a newly completed Boeing Business Jet with the quietest wide-body interior in the world.  The aircraft’s thermal and acoustic system, designed and manufactured by Flight Environments, Inc. of Paso Robles, California, reduced noise in the aircraft to a consistent 46 dB(SIL) average throughout the entire cabin.  Two independent firms confirmed acoustical readings for the aircraft: one on behalf of the customer, and WJHW of Dallas, Texas on behalf of Flight Environments.

Flight Environments was contracted directly by the customer to create “the quietest cabin in the world.”  They answered by combining an unprecedented number of treatments with painstaking attention to detail.  “Since the program’s inception we have used the Boeing Business Jet as our technology development platform,” said Eamon Halpin, President and CEO of Flight Environments.  “Over the last nine years we’ve made calculated changes in our personnel, our materials selection, and our methods.  We have gradually developed new treatments and refined our system one installation at a time, one flight test at a time. That work culminated with this opportunity to work directly on behalf of this customer, who was fully committed to maximizing noise reduction in its aircraft, and gave us the authority to do whatever it took to achieve their goal.  We combined our experience from over 30 previous BBJ treatments into one system, with record-setting results.”

An STC’d system of twenty nine (29) unique treatments conforming to strict weight criteria combined to reduce sound levels in the previously treated cabin by an average of almost 10 dB(SIL) to achieve a 46 dB(SIL) average, with little variation from room to room.

"The efforts of Boeing Business Jets' many partners and preferred vendors have contributed to the success of the BBJ. Flight Environments, for example, has worked on the program since the beginning, and we are proud to be associated with such a company. The BBJ Cabin Comfort System they build enables the BBJ to be the quietest ultra-large cabin business jet flying today," said Steven Hill, president of Boeing Business Jets.

Boeing Business Jets is a joint venture with General Electric launched in July 1996 to respond to market demand for a larger, more capable business airplane that can fly more than 6,000 nautical miles. The versatility of the BBJ, a version of the Boeing 737-700, allows owners to create a unique environment tailored to their specific needs and seating requirements – whether it’s for eight or 100 passengers – for private, corporate, or charter use or for government transport.

Flight Environments, the leading supplier of thermal and acoustic insulation systems for private and corporately configured aircraft, uses a repertoire of over 85 combinations of sound-dampening materials to develop its custom-tailored sound solutions. In addition to sound reduction, Flight Environments’ materials provide a water vapor barrier and thermal insulation, helping to prolong the life of cabin materials while maintaining a comfortable cabin temperature. FEI systems and materials meet or exceed the Federal Aviation Association’s (FAA) recently adopted “Improved Flammability Standards” and comply with CFR 25.856 (a).
